Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to help you understand the neuropsychological evaluation process.

Why would I need a neuropsychological evaluation?

Evaluations are often recommended if there are concerns about memory, attention, thinking speed, language, mood, or changes in daily functioning. They help clarify the cause of cognitive difficulties and inform treatment or care planning.

Patients are commonly referred by a neurologist, psychiatrist, primary care physician, or other healthcare professional. Family members may also suggest an evaluation if changes in cognition or behavior are noticed.

If you are using insurance, a referral is required.

Family members are often invited to participate in portions of the evaluation, such as providing background information during the diagnostic interview or attending the feedback session. However, they are not permitted to accompany the patient during the testing portion of the evaluation.

To ensure the most accurate results:

  • Rest well: Get a good night’s sleep before your appointment.
  • Eat appropriately: Have a healthy meal beforehand to maintain energy and focus.
  • Bring information: Bring a list of current medications, relevant medical records, and any previous test results if available.
  • Minimize distractions: Avoid excessive caffeine, alcohol, or substances that could affect concentration.
  • Plan for time: Set aside several hours for testing.

These steps help ensure the evaluation reflects your true cognitive abilities.

Yes. With your permission, the report can be shared with your healthcare providers.

The evaluation typically includes a clinical interview, cognitive testing, and questionnaires about mood, behavior, or daily functioning. The evaluation is personalized to each patient’s needs and usually takes several hours. A detailed feedback session is provided upon request to explain results and recommendations.

Results are typically available within four weeks after testing.

Neuropsychological evaluation results provide a detailed understanding of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning. They help identify strengths and areas of difficulty, clarify diagnoses, and guide personalized treatment plans. This information can be used to:

  • Develop strategies to manage cognitive challenges in daily life
  • Guide medical or psychiatric treatment decisions
  • Inform therapy, rehabilitation, or support services
  • Provide recommendations for accommodations at work, school, or home

In short, the evaluation helps patients, families, and healthcare providers make informed decisions to improve overall functioning and quality of life.
